Misconceptions about God

I thought I would start my new teaching page section with writing about misconceptions that we can have about God and who He is.  I am going to draw on my own personal insights/experiences and also refer to the Bible, so apologies if you have never ever read the Bible before but hopefully this will help provide some insight and enlightenment for you.

Knowing what I know now compared to what I knew about God 14 years ago I sometimes feel sorry for God.  He seems to get blamed for so much. There are certain questions I get asked many times as a christian.  There are 2 in particular which are the common ones. In this blog today I am going to elaborate on the first one:

Q1If God is love, then why does He allow so much suffering?  Well my answer to that is, and brace yourself you may not like the answer but please stick with me until I explain ok.

The simple answer is, "God allows what we allow."  Does that shock you?

God has given us free will and the right to choose.  That is very biblical.  Unlike the devil. God does not use brute force, control us or coerce us into submission. Love does not control.  God says He is love. 1 John 4:7-21. He gives us the right to choose whether to do things His way or our own way or even the devils way.  We get the right to choose.

Deuteronomy 30:15 But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, so that you may obey it. 15 See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, as well as death and disaster. 16 For I am commanding you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, statutes, and ordinances, so that you may live and increase, and the LORD your God may bless you in the land you are entering to possess.…

The Bible is an instruction manual for living.  God inspired men to write it and record certain events that happened throughout history.  When reading the Bible it is important always consider the time, the culture and historical contexts in which it was written and not read it completely literally and take one scripture and make a whole doctrine out of it.  This is what unfortunately has happened on numerous occasions throughout the ages, particularly where it concerns women and women's role in society and the church for example.  But more on that another time. We also need to realize that the Bible is a book containing 8 different and completely separate covenants!  When reading or studying it we must be mindful of that and then able to divide it correctly. We need to be aware that we are living in the dispensation of the NEW COVENANT of GRACE, not the OLD COVENANT of MOSAIC LAW.  It makes all the difference when reading the Bible, it profoundly does. But again more on that later!

So let me go right back to the beginning where it all began and then explain how things then went pear shaped - unfortunately for all of us. Through one Man's disobedience.  (Read Romans 5:19) Yes it a man's fault ladies, so all you women out there can breath a sigh of relief.  For once we don't get the blame! Haha.

In the Bible right at the very beginning God told Adam not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil for on the day that he did he would die.  Adam forgot to tell his wife Eve didn't he and Eve being deceived, took the fruit and then gave it to Adam, who knew full well God had told him not to eat it.  Eve didn't know, God hadn't told her, He only told Adam.  It was Adam's responsibility to tell her no.

Unfortunately what happened next was, as we call it in the christian circles, 'the fall of human kind.' Up until that point Adam and Eve only knew good, they didn't know evil. They were living in paradise. The Bible says in Genesis chapter 1, in 7 days God created the heavens and the earth and everything in the earth and He looked at everything He created and said, "It is GOOD!"

Imagine. Living in a place where there is absolutely no sickness, no lack, no poverty, no fear, no depression, no hate, no death and no destruction. It was Utopia!

Disaster struck that fateful day when God told them not to eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil for the day that they did they would die.  But God didn't mean die physically, He meant spiritually because if He had meant physically then they would not have been able to leave the garden and then have children would they?  With Biblical things you have think about it all and not just read scripture then quote it verbatim at people to beat them over the head with it.

The spiritual connection between God and humans was now broken.  It was like a giant spiritual umbilical chord had been severed.  Adam and Eve now no longer belonged to God or where living under His protection or authority because they chose to disobey.  Instead they obeyed the voice of the adversary, the devil and therefore transferred their allegiance to the devil who now ruled over them, as an evil tyrant and task master. A slave driver!

The devil once worshiped God in heaven, but like Adam and Eve, through pride he chose to rebel against God.  He thought he knew better and he wanted to be God and he incited 1/3rd of God's angels to rebel against God's authority.

God, because of Lucifer's rebellion and evil heart had to send him out of heaven to protect the rest of his angelic host from being corrupted and incited to further rebellion, and threw him out of heaven to earth where he roamed causing nothing but chaos and darkness. He lost the glory of God. Away from God's light and love he became everything opposite to good and was transformed into everything evil.  So now where God operates in faith, the devil operates in fear. Where God operates in love, the enemy operates in hate.  Where God brings light, love, healing, abundance and everything good, the devil brings darkness, hate, sickness, disease, death, mental illness, poverty and everything evil and bad.

Adam and Eve ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.  The curse came into the world. God could no longer allow Adam and Eve to remain in the Garden of Eden (which means "delight.") because if they had stayed there then the curse would begin to operate for all eternity.  Imagine, the place God created for only good, now being a place where human kind would have to endure sickness, death, poverty for ever and ever and ever and ever.  Tragic.  So God guarded the way to Eternal Life with a flaming sword, he lovingly clothed Adam and Eve and with a heavy heart sent them out of the garden to toil on earth and work hard for a living.  You can read the story from Genesis chapter 1- 5.  God said he regretted making human kind on the earth.  You know why? Because the devil had been there with them to tempt them to sin and he succeeded. That malignantly evil being that he is.  He is the one responsible for all the evil in the world and also incites people to do evil things.

But, this is the exciting part, even from way back then, God in His love created a plan of redemption to restore human kind back to Him, back under His authority and back to the garden of Eden , the original place and plan to live in paradise.  In the Bible it is called "The Promised Land."

This plan of redemption, my friend, has been playing out now for centuries through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  2000 years ago at a cross at Calvary, Jesus died as a replacement sacrifice for you and me to personally bare the punishment of all human kind's sin, rebellion, disobedience to God and the effects of the curse.  He took all the curse that came in from that one act of rebellion in the Garden on to Himself so that we no longer have to receive it or any punishment.

But in order to receive it, we must make Jesus Lord over our lives and declare our allegiance to Him and learn God's ways by renewing our thinking to His ways of living and being and that comes from spending time in His Word, the Bible.  Once we know Him, once we live and walk and behave in God's way, once we know the Truth,  it will completely liberate us and set us free from all the affects of the curse.  But we have to obtain that knowledge and then apply it to our lives. That my friend takes much time and effort.  The Promised Land is waiting for you, God is just waiting for you to let Him help you get there.  He loves you and wants to restore you life, heal you, and liberate you from all the affects of the curse, all the effects of all the evil perpetrated against you that you have ever experienced so far in this life and then, like me, use your mess to be a message to help others get into the Promise Land too.

That is is for now, until next time.  Do ask me any questions or if there is anything you don't understand please drop me a line through my message box.  Unfortunately time might not allow me to respond to everyone as quickly as I would like and please, I will not be responding to any hate filled or abusive messages.  Please be polite, loving and considerate, even if you don't agree with me.

God bless you and make His wonderful face to shine upon you always.

With love

Rachel xx
